Cleft Fencing

Carriage Drive (2014 – 2016)

We aim to recreate the main qualities of the formal entrance drive from Cadle to the site of the former Penllergare House (where the Penllergaer Council Offices now stand). The encroaching trees and shrubs will be cut back to open up the views while maintaining that wild and picturesque landscape that makes Valley Woods so…

Terrace Gardens and Historic Paths (2012 – 2016)

We are currently in the process of repairing and restoring historic steps, terraces, and footbridges in the north of the estate. An interpretative tour around the valley will be developed and a fully accessible footbridge will create a greater variety of circuits. Our woodland volunteers have been working hard replanting specimen trees and ornamental shrubberies…

Archimedean Screw

Archimedean Screw (2013 – 2016)

An Archimedean screw microhydropower turbine was installed on the east bank of the waterfall in Autumn 2014 to generate renewable energy and to help fund future maintenance. We also believe that it is in the spirit of the progressive approach adopted by John Dillwyn Llewelyn in the 19th century. This area will be landscaped in 2015/16.…

Early Autumn Colours - Upper Lake - Carey Beor Autumn 2014 (R)

Upper Lake (2012 – 14)

The Upper Lake above the waterfall was cleared by volunteers in 2012 and de-silted over two summers in 2013/14 in order to reinstate it to its historic form and prevent total reversion to marshland. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Veolia Environmental Trust and Natural Resources Wales.

Rebuilt Llewelyn Bridge

Old Llewelyn Bridge (2013)

With careful integration of a sewerage pipe over the river Llan and using photographic evidence from the 19th century, the old stone bridge was recreated in the traditional style by our stonemason in 2013. It is now a fully accessible river crossing and a visual feature in the landscape. It was officially opened in April…

Nyddfwch

Nyddfwch

From the late medieval period Nyddfwch was a separate estate. It was absorbed into Penllergare in 1756 on the marriage of Jane Mathews of Nyddfwch to Griffith Price of Penllergare; then it fell into disrepair and later abandoned. The site of the now demolished house lies at the edge of a steep east-facing slope. From…

Lower Lake from the air

Lower Lake and Cascades

Starting in 1838, John Dillwyn Llewelyn created two lakes and two waterfalls in the valley as part of his grand design. Boating was a popular activity for the family on Lower Lake and the boathouse a favourite picnic location. The footings of the boathouse and the remains of the old dam are still visible –…
