Heritage Lottery Funding for Penllergare – Phase 2
The Heritage Lottery Fund announced today £1,791,500 grant has been awarded to the Ymddiriedolaeth Penllergare Trust towards a second phase of restoration for Penllergare Valley Woods. This award is First Round funding from HLF, including a development grant to progress the project in more detail in advance of a further funding bid at the Second Round.
In brief, this second phase includes management of the river valley as a wetland habitat, balancing conservation with public access, restoring the orchid house and walled garden.
Commenting on the award Jennifer Stewart, Head of the HLF in Wales, said, “This delightful project will make the Walled Gardens a real asset for the people of Swansea. It is a project that has been put together by volunteers who have drawn up a strong case to draw more visitors to the area.
“To support the project, HLF has earmarked funding of £1,791,500, including a development grant of £ 159,800, which will be spent on developing plans for the project in more detail. In doing so we believe Penllergare Walled Gardens it an excellent investment of National Lottery players’ money.”
Trustee Ray Butt was interviewed this morning on BBC Radio Wales Good Morning Wales programme at 7.20am and there have been several press releases in the media.
This is excellent news for the continuing restoration of Penllergare Valley Woods.
