June Wildlife

This month our Volunteer Ranger and photographer, Brian Meredith, was lucky enough to spot this weasel. Weasels are a rare sight at Penllergare, and a chance encounter with the camera got Brian this lovely shot as the weasel crossed his path. A more common sight in the Valley Woods are squirrels, which can often be…

Wildlife in May

This cheerful-looking fox was seen in Nydfwch this month.  We also have a variety of birds living in and visiting the Valley Woods.  A Greater Spotted Woodpecker can often be spotted on the feeders near to our Coffee Shop terrace.  With thanks to Brian Meredith and Tony Morgan for the photographs.

Day Flying Daubenton Bat

Captured by volunteer photographer Peter Thomas on Monday 14th March, this incredible shot of a Daubenton bat flying over the Upper Lake is quite amazing. It was feasting on insects hatching in the warm Spring sun. Bats will often move during daylight hours if the temperature or humidity levels go beyond their needs in either…

In a rare break in the weather, Geoff managed to capture some stunning images. The cormorant, mallards and moorhens are enjoying life on the Lower Lake while the Kingfisher has been spotted fishing…

Penllergare Kingfisher

Thank you to Voluntary Ranger, Brian Meredith and his patience which has paid off with these amazing shots of our resident Kingfisher, which is often spotted on the Upper Lake at Penllergare Valley Woods. We think this is worthy of a spot on the BBC Countryfile calendar.

Thank you to regular volunteer Christine, who has been busy with her camera.  There are definite signs of the change of the seasons at Penllergare Valley Woods.

Pink Grasshopper

Thank you to Pete Thomas (Borderline Photo) for sending in his photo of this pink grasshopper. The colour of the grasshopper is caused by erythrism, a little known genetic mutation statistically, it is easier to win the lottery than see one, most wont make it to adult life as they are very susceptible to predators.
