Water Vole Recovery Project

You may remember Ratty from your childhood as the lovable character in Wind in The Willows. In real life the Water Vole (Ratty) has seen dramatic decline in their numbers across the UK in recent years

We know that Water Voles have been here in the last decade as they were recorded here in 2016. With this in mind, we are looking to start a project to enhance and protect the habitat around the Lower Lake and river that they love, and to make it an even more suitable home for them in the future. This will involve fencing around the top of the Lower Lake to prevent dogs from disturbing the area, creating a new network of channels and ponds and reducing tree cover in places to encourage the growth of the plants and grasses they feed on.
