EDUCATION EXPERIENCES

In partnership with Wild Science with Wild Space, we bring nature, science, and adventure to life for schools and groups at Penllergare Valley Woods. Our immersive, hands-on outdoor learning experiences support curriculum goals while building confidence, teamwork, and a deep connection with nature.

Wild Science with Wild Space

FRESHWATER CREATURES

Key Topics: Life Cycles, Food Chains, Habitats, Geography

How have lakes and rivers been formed over the years, and what part do they play in the creatures that live within? Have a go at pond dipping to find and identify creatures before taking a look at the surrounding landscapes.

BEES, POLLEN & PLANTS

Key Topics: Adaptations, Pollination, Biology

An easily recognisable bunch of creatures that children of all ages have witnessed in their lives. We take a look at different types of bees (queen, worker, and social) as well as the shapes of butterflies and plant flowers to see whether we can form connections between adaptations.

MINIBEASTS & MINIHABITATS

Key Topics: Life Cycles, Food Chains, Habitats, Adaptation

Who lives in the different habitats around us? We take a look under the soil, in the trees, and flying above the plants to identify what minibeasts are around us. Go on a minibeast hunt before looking at creating a microhabitat of our own.

SCIENCE WORKSHOPS

Suitable for indoor sessions within the Woodland Centre.

FOSSIL FINDERS

Key Topics: Evolution, Adaptation, Geology, Geography

Explore the prehistoric world with our fossil finders science workshop! We’ll be looking through shingle and rocks, seeing if we can find any indicators of previous life before then aging our finds.

SPEW NOT POO! OWL PELLET ANALYSIS

Key Topics: Life Cycles, Food Chains, Habitats (Suitable for KS1+ only)

What have owls been eating? Can we tell their diet and the wildlife around us from analyzing the food eaten inside of an owl pellet? We’ll be looking through the pellets and identifying prey before then creating a food chain of our own.
