Friday 24th September is Biodiversity Day here at Penllergare Valley Woods! As a part of the national Great Big Green Week we are celebrating the amazing and rich biodiversity that can be found here
The national Great Big Green Week runs from 18th to 26th September this year and the Penllergare Trust has seen it as a great opportunity to celebrate and highlight the amazing and rich biodiversity that the site has to offer. Penllergare Valley Woods forms an essential green corridor connecting Gower to the rest of Wales. As a green lung in northern Swansea, the woods are host to many species of flora and fauna, and provide vital connectivity to surrounding areas.
To help celebrate the wonderful biodiversity at the woods we are hosting two free guided walks that day. In the morning on the 24th our Trustee (Ciaran O’Brien) who leads on ecology and conservation for the Trust is leading a walk on Birds, Butterflies and Bees.
That evening we will be joined by our colleagues from the Glamorgan Bat Group, who will be leading a bat walk around the woods. Penllergare is home to at least nine of the eighteen species of bat resident to the UK, including the Daubenton’s bat that you may see fishing insects of the surface of the Upper Lake. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Glamorgan Bat Group for joining us to celebrate our Biodiversity Day, and for leading what is bound to be a very interesting and popular walk.
